EvoRoads’ consortium consists of 20 partners from all over Europe with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. To understand what’s behind EvoRoads and how it is relevant for citizens and other stakeholders we are launching a series of interviews with the project’s team. Today, we introduce BEIA Consult International.
Can you tell us a little about your organisation?
BEIA Consult International is a Romanian technology company with more than 30 years of experience in telecommunications and over 10,000 completed projects. We design and integrate solutions for the Internet of Things, smart cities, environmental monitoring, telemedicine and smart energy. Our objective is to transform communications and data from connected devices, mobile applications, drones and satellite services into practical tools that help organisations operate more safely, efficiently and sustainably.
What prompted your organisation to join the EvoRoads consortium? What is the role of your organisation in the project?
BEIA joined EvoRoads because the project combines our experience in communications, connected monitoring and smart-city solutions with the urgent need for safer roads. We support the Romanian Living Lab in Alba Iulia by contributing an IoT platform for timely data exchange and helping integrate multiple sources of road information. These include drone imagery, satellite imagery, roadside and vehicle sensors, and crowdsourcing applications that allow citizens to provide useful observations through their smartphones.
Which outcome is your organisation looking forward to the most?
We are especially looking forward to the integrated infrastructure monitoring and Road Digital Twin applications. By combining drone imagery, satellite imagery, sensor measurements and information collected through smartphone crowdsourcing applications, road operators can gain a more complete view of road conditions and emerging risks. For BEIA, this outcome can strengthen our IoT and smart-city portfolio while creating reusable services for future research projects and practical deployments in Romania and other European countries.
Which aspects of EvoRoads do you think are going to be the most impactful for citizens and why?
Citizens will benefit most from earlier identification of hazards and better-targeted safety warnings. Drone and satellite imagery can reveal road or infrastructure problems across wider areas, while crowdsourcing applications on smartphones can provide timely information from people travelling through the city. Combined with connected sensors, these sources can help drivers, cyclists and pedestrians make safer decisions and enable Alba Iulia’s authorities to prioritise maintenance and improvements, to reduce the number of accidents and increase the traffic safety.
Would you like to draw attention to something else?
EvoRoads shows that safer mobility depends on combining technology with local knowledge. In Alba Iulia, drone imagery offers detailed views of selected infrastructure, satellite imagery supports monitoring across larger areas, and smartphone crowdsourcing applications can add observations from road users. Bringing these sources together within a shared platform will help test solutions under real urban and suburban conditions. The lessons learned can support future deployment in other Romanian and European communities and contribute to the EU’s Vision Zero ambition.
