Objectives

EvoRoads’ project vision will be accomplished through 5 specific objectives that investigate methodological, economic, technical, and regulatory aspects of road safety:

1. Develop a multi-layered evolutionary safety assessment framework, integrated into a safe mobility data space, capable of dynamically scoring road safety criteria and quantifying safety-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

a. Considering safety criteria required for all dimensions of the ‘safe system’ approach

b. Understanding unexplored correlations between criteria and KPIs through data-driven knowledge discovery and semantic data transformations

c. Capitalising on intelligence generated through advanced infrastructure monitoring technologies

d. Considering the impact of safety interventions on the improvement of road infrastructures

2. Facilitate holistic monitoring of urban and rural road infrastructures through the deployment of a federated platform of interconnected services and tools

a. Detecting infrastructure deterioration and distress conditions at different geospatial resolutions

b. Using heterogeneous data from crowdsourcing, satellite and aerial imagery, drone- and vehicle-mounted video capture technologies and multi-vehicle on-board sensors for optimal infrastructure monitoring

c. Proactively warning road-users of anticipated hazards through situational aware traffic management and on-the-edge computing

d. Enhancing road maintenance operations through the construction of advanced diagnosis and prognosis roadmaps based on predictive analytics services

3. Develop a compliant to the ‘Safe System” approach integrated safety management platform

a. Supported by advanced cyber-physical infrastructure assessment approaches

b. Using various heterogeneous data sources

c. Integrated into a federated digital twin ecosystem

d. Supported by user behavior modelling, seamless interfacing, innovative connectivity platforms and data sharing across various stakeholders

4. Deploy and validate the effectiveness of the EvoRoads solutions in 4 representative cities and areas, covering varying EU urban and rural contexts, road safety quality levels and social conditions

5. Assure the exploitation and standardisation of the proposed solutions, and provide policy recommendations documenting the lessons learnt to support EvoRoads’ innovations take-up
