EvoRoads’ consortium consists of 20 partners from all over Europe with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. To understand what’s behind EvoRoads and how it is relevant for citizens and other stakeholders we are launching a series of interviews with the project’s team. Today, Dr. Christos Laoudias, Research Lecturer and Dr. Leonidas Katelaris, Research Associate, KIOS Center of Excellence, introduce KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, University of Cyprus (UCY)
Can you tell us a little about your organisation?
The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence operates within the University of Cyprus and currently is the largest research center at the University. KIOS is a leading research and innovation center in Cyprus and the region on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Since its establishment in 2008, the Center has followed an impressive and continuous development, leading to its significant upgrade to a European Research Center of Excellence through the EU strategic Horizon 2020 Teaming project in 2017. KIOS provides an inspiring environment for conducting excellent, cutting-edge research at a global scale, producing new knowledge and advanced technological tools to improve the operation, efficiency, reliability, safety, and security of critical infrastructure systems, bringing major socio-economic and environmental benefits at the local and global level.
What prompted your organisation to join the EvoRoads consortium? What is the role of your organisation in the project?
KIOS’ expertise in ICT related to critical infrastructures monitoring and control, connected and autonomous vehicles, traffic congestion management, and cybersecurity in vehicles aligns well with EvoRoads’ objectives. Within EvoRoads, KIOS leads a Work Package, focusing on advanced infrastructure monitoring and predictive maintenance tools. We are responsible for data acquisition and processing for road infrastructure monitoring, and as technology providers, we participate actively in the project’s Scientific and Technical Committee.
Which outcome is your organisation looking forward to the most?
We are particularly excited about developing innovative technologies for dynamic monitoring and data-driven safety assessment frameworks, which are core objectives of EvoRoads. This approach enables proactive identification and management of safety risks, significantly enhancing road infrastructure resilience. These outcomes align directly with our research strengths and create opportunities for future projects focused on smarter, safer transportation systems across Europe.
Which aspects of EvoRoads do you think are going to be the most impactful for citizens and why?
The most impactful aspect of EvoRoads will be its proactive approach to road safety, enabled by advanced monitoring technologies and predictive analytics. By identifying risks before incidents occur, EvoRoads directly contributes to reducing accidents and fatalities, ultimately saving lives. Furthermore, by improving road infrastructure resilience and efficiency, the project will enhance citizens’ everyday mobility experiences, promoting safer and more sustainable transportation communities.
