EvoRoads’ consortium consists of 20 partners from all over Europe with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. To understand what’s behind EvoRoads and how it is relevant for citizens and other stakeholders we are launching a series of interviews with the project’s team. Today, we introduce the Spanish Ministry of Transports and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS)
Can you tell us a little about your organisation?
The Spanish Ministry of Transports and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS) is the national public administration department dedicated to road management, including activities such as planning, construction, operation and maintenance.
MITMS operates a network of more than 26.400 kilometres, concentrating most of the traffic and heavy-duty vehicles.
In recent years, innovation has achieved a more important role at MITMS, which has increased its participation in research and innovation actions through programs such as HORIZON and other national initiatives, and has launched different innovative public procurement procedures to serve as a driving force for the development of new solutions capable of solving major problems in a more efficient manner.
What prompted your organisation to join the EvoRoads consortium? What is the role of your organisation in the project?
MITMS participates under the role of associated partner with interest in contributing to define some of the digitalisation and asset management criteria under the perspective of a public authority managing a huge amount of these elements. MITMS also has interest in contributing to reach a holistic approach to road safety, taking into consideration that mobility, traffic and non-infrastructure safety aspects are under the responsibility of another ministry.
Which outcome is your organisation looking forward to the most?
MITMS is particularly interested in discovering new approaches for asset management, especially those focused on road surface and signage.
Which aspects of EvoRoads do you think are going to be the most impactful for citizens and why?
Gaining a holistic safe approach could be one of the key aspects for achieving a significative reduction in the number of deaths by accident, considering that the numbers in Spain keep a non-varying trend since 2013.
